What to Expect at a Litter Pick

To make sure you have a great experience alongside volunteers, like you, who are dedicated to making Seattle beautiful and safe for all, we have a few things for you to keep in mind before you arrive…

Dress for Success!
For your safety, please arrive wearing:

  • Long pants
  • Long sleeves
  • Tall socks (recommended)
  • Sturdy, closed-toed shoes or boots are a MUST (no sandals!)
  • Masks are not required, but may be helpful if you are sensitive to smells

Good things to know:

  • WHS provides gloves, grabbers, rakes and garbage bags
  • Layers are recommended as the temperature may fluctuate
  • Most cleanup sites are in areas where wildlife exists, even in urban environments
  • Important day-of phone numbers:
    – Tim Emerson, Program Director: (509) 563-9885
    – Andrea Suarez, Executive Director: (206) 850-4290

Valuables
Make sure to leave your valuables at home – WHS is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

While some of our litter picks are literally a walk in the park, it is important that you dress for working outdoors in Seattle weather, while handling garbage or other debris. Be it at a park, or downtown Seattle, we can’t guarantee you won’t encounter unpleasant smells, critters, and some hazardous materials – but we know if you come prepared, you will have a lot of fun while doing something really good for the community and the environment.

One more thing…
If you haven’t already completed the Volunteer Release and Waiver of Liability form, please visit the main volunteer page and complete the Waiver.

Thank you for doing your part in making Seattle beautiful and safe for all. We appreciate you and can’t wait to work side-by-side!
